Poultry

Chicken supply remains strong, with year-to-date production running above last year and that added volume continuing to pressure most chicken pricing. Breasts were relatively steady, while tenders and boneless skinless thighs weakened more noticeably; wings were the key exception, rising sharply for a second straight week, though they still remain below last year’s levels. Egg markets also firmed.

Outlook: Poultry pricing should stay mostly manageable near term, though wing prices may remain the biggest watchout and any slowdown in production growth could start to stabilize the broader complex later on.

Beef

Beef production improved versus the holiday-shortened prior week but remains well below last year, with year-to-date output still down on lower cattle slaughter. Most beef markets softened, including choice and select cutouts and several primals, but domestic lean trim stayed historically expensive while imported trim began to ease.

Outlook: Beef should remain a high-cost category overall, but some near-term relief may develop in imported lean beef while domestic trim stays elevated.

Pork

Pork production moved higher and is running above last year, helped by both increased slaughter and heavier weights. Even with softer cash hog markets, the pork cutout rose on strength in bellies and hams, while ribs, loins, butts, and picnics were weaker; overall pork values are still well below last year.

Outlook: Pork should remain one of the more favorable animal proteins in the near term, though longer-term supply support will depend on continued gains in pigs per litter.

Produce

Lettuce saw the most dramatic move, with iceberg prices falling sharply over the last two weeks despite still-tight western supply. Avocados also continued to decline and have moved lower than expected, though the rate of decline is beginning to slow.

Outlook: Produce buyers should expect lettuce and avocado markets to begin leveling off soon, with only modest upside risk, especially for avocados later in the summer.

Dairy

Cheese posted weekly gains while the rest of the dairy complex was softer, and both cheese and butter remain below year-ago levels. Seasonal milk production declines, active butter demand, improving nonfat dry milk exports, and tight milk availability for cheese plants are supportive, but a growing milk cow herd could cap upside.

Outlook: Dairy prices may find some short-term support, but expanding herd size should help limit how far the market can run.

Grains

Grain markets were mostly firmer on the week, with corn and soybeans benefiting from early weather concerns and wheat finishing particularly strong. Corn gave back part of its rally as forecasts turned cooler, reducing immediate yield worries.

Outlook: Unless weather turns threatening again, corn looks more likely to trade sideways to slightly lower than break materially higher from here.

Seafood

Fresh Atlantic salmon filet remained relatively stable, with only a modest monthly decline, and prices are still well below last year despite some recovery earlier in the year. The market appears to be searching for a floor after last year’s correction, with flatter pricing likely in the near term.

Outlook: Salmon prices are likely to stay relatively flat through the near term, with more meaningful upside not expected until later in the year.
