Is the U.S. Corn Crop in Trouble?

ArrowStream’s commodity expert, David Maloni, published in today’s Weekly Commodity Report that somewhere between 200 million and 500 million bushels of corn are at risk due to planting delays.

“We should be okay,” said David Maloni, EVP of Analytics at ArrowStream. “However, history tells us that this needs to be a big week of planting progress. In 2013, the current analog year we are utilizing, a whopping 43 percent of the crop was planted this week alone. And as the chart shows above, the other years since 1980 when planting was behind, this was also a big week for planting progress. Expectations are that notable planting progress won’t be made this week, potentially putting us at the slowest pace on record. And if so, this could escalate the number of corn bushels that are at risk rather sharply. Thus, some corn coverage makes sense here.”
